The XV World Forestry Congress Secretariat kicks off work in Daejeon, Korea and Rome, Italy

The Korea Forest Service (KFS) has officially opened the new office for the Secretariat for the XV World Forestry Congress (XV WFC). Minister PARK Chong-ho of the Korea Forest Service, together with members of the XV WFC Secretariat, unveiled the sign of the new offices in a ceremony on 9 March 2020.

The Government of Korea will host the 15th edition of the Congress, which will be held on 24-28 May of 2021 in Seoul. The World Forestry Congress is held every 6 years under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and aims to bring together a broad range of stakeholders to review and analyze current forest and land use issues, and propose solutions for improved management and use of these resources. The Congress is open to all stakeholders, including governments non-governmental and civil society organizations, private sector, academia, and other interested parties and individuals.

Preparations have begun in Daejeon for the KFS team, as well as in Rome, Italy with the FAO team. The teams will work together in setting the agenda and programme for the Congress. At the opening of the office, Mr Ko Ki-yeon, Secretary-General of the XV WFC emphasized that by hosting the Congress Korea also seeks an opportunity to share its successful forestation model with the international community, and present Korea’s future vision on forests.

The FAO team participated in the opening through a video message. Peter Csoka, Associate Secretary-General of the XV WFC underlined that the Congress will have a golden opportunity to address the biggest challenges of our days and discuss how forests can contribute to solving them and make the world a better, safer, more prosperous place.
