Description
The UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration provide unprecedented targets for the restoration of degraded land and the return of billions of trees to previously forested or tree-dominated landscapes through forest and landscape restoration (FLR) Tree-based restoration offers numerous benefits for global climate-change mitigation, more sustainable and resilient food systems and enhanced biodiversity conservation. FLR project success requires high-quality and genetically diverse tree seed. Genetic diversity will provide adaptive potential and help in resisting pest and disease outbreaks and coping with climate change. A failure to take genetic diversity and the quality of reproductive materials into account in FLR, will have serious consequences. Bioversity International and FAO FLRM team developed an online learning journey through webinars and online discussions to build capacity of national project teams under The Restoration Initiative and the IKI project “The Paris Agreement in action: upscaling forest and landscape restoration to achieve nationally determined contributions” and raise awareness of the importance of tree genetic resources for resilient landscape restoration. In this side event we propose to highlight the needs and challenges faced by restoration practitioners, present a number of innovative solutions, priority areas for future funding and lessons learned from this online webinar. Finally we propose to end the event with panel discussion on the next steps to ensure that tree-genetic resources are at the foundation of forest landscape restoration planning and implementation.
